This workshop will guide students through the process of creating a finished figure painting (or two works: one figure and one portrait) in oil paint, developed over an initial value study. The class emphasizes the “drawing with paint” approach, inspired by the Incamminati tradition, which encourages students to build their paintings directly with the brush and color.

Students will review materials and begin with quick studies, working in a loose oil wash of burnt and raw umber to establish form and value. These fast-drying underpaintings provide the foundation for more sustained work. The afternoon will be dedicated to longer poses, where students will refine drawing accuracy, develop value relationships, and apply color to create depth and vitality in the figure.

By the end of the workshop, students will have completed at least one finished figure painting and gained a deeper understanding of how to move from drawing into full color.
