The first thing we notice in a painting is the mood conveyed by the sky. Whether it's a chilly winter day or a blazing sun, the weather and time of day are palpable. "Paint the relationships between the sky and the earth first, and only then address the many elements in between," is advice from one of Ulrich's early mentors during his time at the Russian Academy of Arts.
As a painter, Ulrich is drawn to the timeless aspects of landscapes that resonate with everyone—sunrises, snowy scenes, and forests. For him, a plein air painting serves as a diary of the painter’s life, with the viewer completing the narrative by feeling, enjoying, and relating to the scene.
In the workshop, students will paint en plein air in the stunning natural beauty of the landscape in Wisconsin during the fall. Barns, creeks, forests, and more. Ulrich will guide students in observing the broader relationships within the scene and translating them onto the canvas. Participants will learn to maintain color harmony, depict light and shadow, understand proportions, and capture the unique essence of their subjects.
