This class is a color theory intensive for the figurative oil painter. Through lecture, demo, and exercises, we will develop practical approaches to color, beginning with the concepts of hue, value, and chroma/intensity. We will discuss the qualities of pigment and oil paint, including tinting strength, transparency, and lightfastness, and explore how to use our paints with an understanding of their specific physical properties. Working with a model each day, we will use this knowledge to approach color mixing for both accuracy and creative color palettes. Students will explore various limited palettes and color moods in a series of studies and small paintings. All students are encouraged to develop their own personal approach to color through the exercises in the class. We will work from life with a clothed model on the final day of class.

This class is suitable for beginner to advanced painters, ages 14+.

Class size is limited to 12 students.
