This workshop will explore safe practices and helpful strategies for at-home oil painters without access to a separate studio or adequate ventilation for solvent use. This is NOT a class on water-soluble oils: this is a course exploring how to use regular oil paints without the solvents that many contemporary painters rely on, and how to make the most of an oil painting practice in a home setting. In the first half of the class, we will discuss the major questions and challenges of solvent-free painting: under-painting, managing drying times, cleaning brushes, and choosing mediums. We will also discuss other safety concerns beyond solvents, and strategies for setting up a comfortable and successful home painting practice in your living room. In the second half of the class (after a 90 minute lunch break), we will have a model, and students will make an alla prima painting using some of the strategies discussed in the morning and will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive feedback as they try these methods. This is a good class for students wanting to get started with oil painting, but equally useful for those with an established practice who want to remove solvents or learn more about solvent-free methods.
Class size is limited to 12 students.
