Introduction to Oil Painting Supply List

Note: These supplies are simply suggestions that I like to use, and what I recommend getting started with. If you have materials that you are comfortable with, that’s fine. Feel free to email katie.hogan.art@gmail.com with any questions.

  • 3 Canvases of your choice, recommend 10” x 12” minimum for each, you can go larger or smaller if desired.

  • Variety of Paintbrushes, long-handled, any brand. Try to pick a couple different ones (filberts, flats, rounds) that you’d like to experiment with. Select a variety of sizes as well.

  • Oil Paint of any brand in the following palette: (this is the basic recommended palette, you can absolutely purchase additional colors if you would like. You may discover additional ones you would like to experiement with as the course progresses!)

    • Titanium White

    • Ivory Black

    • Cadmium Red

    • Cadmium Yellow Pale

    • Alizarin Crimson

    • Raw Umber

    • Ultramarine Blue

  • Palette for oils and acrylics. The Masterson palette usually works best for storage and longevity.

  • Gamsol (the cleanest of the odorless mineral spirits). Atwood Atelier is a turpentine-free zone.

    • Titanium White

    • Viridian Hue

    • Yellow Ochre

  • Starter set of brushes

  • Acrylic primed linen

  • Odorless mineral spirits & jars (for studio use only)

  • linseed oil (for studio use only)

  • Palettes (for studio use only)
